Alembique is Open

After months of struggle against the impact of the pandemic, Alembique is re-opening its red door to our amazing community.

We are open 11-5 PM Tue-Sat, 11-4 Sun. (Hours will be extended soon.) Up to four people at a time can enter which means you can generally just waltz in and browse!

Most of Alembique Work & Playshops are now broadcast both online and--for a limited number of participants who are comfortable with distancing and related protocols---happening at the apothecary and its magical secret courtyard.

Alembique survives and can continue to thrive, thanks to you. We exist for and because of our generous, inspiring and activist community.

While Alembique hours are generally accurate, they may, on occasion, change. So, it's a good idea to communicate with us via text/email before you come from afar. We may, after all, be at the farm, on a field-trip, tending to a life event, or here.

  • ENROLL | Live Video $45/person

Creams and lotions are among the most challenging healing concoctions to make yourself and among the priciest things to buy from cosmetic corporations. And no matter how much you spend, they are seldom truly all-natural and petrochemical-free.

This is why learning how to make all-natural emulsions is key to freedom from toxins and corporate marketing hype. Liberate yourself by learning the art of emulsification. Once mastered, you will be free of more expensive and health-damaging petrochemical products than you can shake an oil refinery at!

We will make Alembique's unbelievably rich, moisturizing Winter Geranium & Rosemary Eye & Face Creme with food-grade and organic ingredients that both protect and heal every skin type.

Return home with your own hand-poured jar of creme, plus recipes and instructions to free you from having to buy another chemical cream or lotion.

Online participants may also receive a jar at 20% discounted price if they pick up at the apothecary. We can also ship cremes at regular price.

Instructor: Bee | Live Video Cost: $45 by Mon. Nov. 9, $55 thereafter (plus 20% off a jar of creme, purchased on day of workshop, to be picked up from apothecary within 1 week). | In-person Cost: $65/person by Mon. Nov. 9, $75 thereafter. In-person attendance is limited to 10 participants to ensure physical distancing.

Alembique has survived until now, despite experiencing tremendous Covid-related duress for a tiny community apothecary, thanks to those of you who support us.

If you wish to help us continue as a community apothecary--the like of which is seldom found anywhere in the world--we will gratefully accept your help.

We are one of the few businesses in the East Bay who received zero assistance from the government. Instead we used our business savings and the help of our community to remain open for everyone who needs us.

If you can, please offer a gift to help sustain Alembique.

We will use your generous gift to sustain the apothecary in myriad ways, from paying the cost of running the apothecary to helping offset the discounts and free goods and services we offer to those who seek plant healing but are unable to pay.

If you are fortunate to be in a strong financial position to fully and directly fund our work and programming for several months ($1000-$15000), please call, email or visit us. We will invite you to a private conversation, prepare alchemical sherbets for you to sip, regale you with the reasons your support is vital for the apothecary and its community, and offer ways you can fund the apothecary and its programs, inlcluding the Community Apothecary Program launching in Spring 2021.

If you have the means to offer a more modest gift that will help us move forward in a precarious time, please consider using the button below.

Alembique Community Apothecary Program

In spring 2021, Alembique will pilot a Community Apothecary Program to empower you to seed and root your own neighborhood sanctuary for plants and underserved communities. We have been wanting to offer this unprecedented yet timely program for years and given our ongoing planetary tailspin, it's now or never!

This 10-week program offers what we have learned at Alembique in service of creating community-based healing spaces and practices, with a special focus on the social, political, ecological and economic facets of community herbalism.

Program participants will work with the fundamental healing herbs that grow at our feet rather than so-called exotic plants from socially and ecologically fragile places across the world.

We will also explore ways to seed and grow a community apothecary by and for marginalized and underserved communities besieged by gentrification and  displacement, among other injustices.

We will plumb ways to grow our commuity apothecary in the fertile soil of intergenerational knowledge and genuine diversity, in solidarity and resilience, informed by both science and tradition.

We will attend to the political ecology of herbal practice in the communities we serve and discuss ways to build alliances that help root our apothecary practice within, for and by the community.

The program comprises seminar discussions, project-based learning and field-work. At least 60% of the program will require in-person attendance, from visiting organic farms and neighborhood gardens to hands-on plant medicine-making, community engagement and reception at the apothecary.

Through fundraising and sponsorships we hope to offer partial scholarships for low-income and/or BIPOC students. In fact, if you know folks who have the means and interest in creating stipends and scholarships, please let us know!

Those seriously interested AND willing to attend in-person, please EMAIL US with a preliminary letter of interest. In December, Alembique will begin reaching out to potential applicants in the order that letters were received. An interview process will follow. You are also welcome to visit the apothecary for a brief chat about the upcoming pilot.

The fee for this 10-week (includes 8-10 hours/week of in-person attendance) program is projected to be between $2500-$3500 per student.

Book a Private Visit

Like millions of microbusinesses, Alembique has been impacted by Covid-19 and will continue to be. To successfully adapt to this new world, we are trying new approaches with our community's support.

In eight years, we have heard thousands of folks from here and all around the world express their love of the apothecary's magical little space. The moment you enter your senses are caressed by the complex aromas of hundreds of herbs and spices, the shimmering colors of glass jars and the dozens of curious objects from another time dancing on the shelves.

In the Before Times, folks of all sorts would come in and browse, lounge on the Golden Chair, laugh, chat and even cry in a surge of emotion. The healing spirit of this 140 year-old space soothes as it has for generations of people. The feeling is as wondrous as it is difficult to describe.

As the lockdown shifts, we are gingerly opening up the apothecary again for a safe enjoyable experience.

Make a 2-day advance appointment for a maximum of three people in the apothecary. We will offer you tea (with sanitary protocols) and give you 30 minutes or more to browse and chat like the olden days except that we will maintain distancing and sanitize hands etc.

We only ask that you make purchases of a minimum of $25/person visiting.

So welcome back and do come in!

Book a Conversation

Want to learn more about how plants can help with a specific health issue? Need something special to help mend, heal, restore and nourish you?

Book a private friendly conversation and tell us your story. Relax in your own golden chair (for now), sip from a cup of freshly brewed tea, and share your story. We will share in return how plant medicine and other approaches can help. We may also share what we know about diet, sleep, stress, trauma--even heart-break!

Following our chat, we can create custom teas and cordials, annointing oils, cremes, balms, or lotion-- in fact almost any concoction--exclusively for you and your specific healing path.

Phone and video sessions (as low as $20 for 15 minutes) available 7-days a week from 10 AM-4 PM.

In this challenging time, Alembique Apothecary's primary mission is to meet your most urgent needs for plant healing to the best of our ability.

Rooted in and existing for the community, Alembique is here for you as we navigate and overcome this crisis together with compassion and courage.

With a little patience on your part and a little extra work on our part, and based on our limited supplies and modest capacity, we believe we can be of help in the following ways:

  • Visit Us in Person | We now are open to walk-in visit but we ask, whenever possible, to please text us at 510 255 0901 30 minutes prior to arrival.

  •  Order by Text/Email for Safe & Easy Pick-Up | Please text us at (510) 255-0901 and we will respond as quickly as possible, usually within an hour. We will verify your order, provide a total, and once you approve, we text you when it's ready for pick up.  You may pay online and pick up from the apothecary without having to enter or be near others. On the occasion when it is important that you enter, we will do our utmost to follow the most current WHO and CA Public Health's protocols. We are also  using masks, gloves and disinfected work surfaces in preparing blends. Please consider ordering a minimum of $25 of goods, if possible.

  • Quick Questions by Phone/Text |  If you feel that you need something urgently for your health or you have a brief question, please call or text us. We love to help.

What Are We Preparing and Offering | After our focus on offering Covid-related products and ingredients that can be considered to be most relevant to maintaining our health in this current crisis (Supertonic Immunitea, Ali Baba Shield Sprays, Immunity Cordials, Lung Love, Tummy Love, Sleeping Angel and Becalm teas, Aloe Baba Hand Spray and Aloe Baba Hand Sanitizer Gel and more), we are now less restricted in the kinds of products we are again making (from face creams, serums, natural deodorant to spermicidal lube!). So talk to us and we will do our best to serve your needs.

What If I Can't Pay | If you are experiencing serious financial difficulties at this critical time, we will offer you a discount or a sliding scale fee. Especially during this critical period, we will not turn anyone away or deny them an urgent conversation or herbal concoction if they are unable to pay.

We are a tiny apothecary but we will do what we can for those in financial distress. And we know our community well: those who can pay will so that those who can't pay still receive support. Especially at a time of crisis, we stand together.

PLEASE NOTE |  In line with legal and regulatory requirements, nothing we say or do here should be construed as diagnosing, preventing, treating, or curing disease. We are NOT medical professionals. We will simply share with you what we have learned about plants and the ways they are used in various traditions.

We wish you a safe, loving and tranquil time in these difficult times. Remember to love fiercely, reflect deeply, take good care of you and others, laugh a little and carry on🐝

Propitious Potions

Research suggests some clinical promise in key plants that may help with immunity and possibly the mitigation of this corona-virus or SARS-CoV-2.

Beyond familiar western herbs like elderberries and echinacea, Alembique is now making its Supertonic Immunitea and Cordials as well as The Ali Baba Antiviral Spray for the Upper Respiratory with less-familiar plants that include Polygonum cuspidatum, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Isatis indigotica, but also licorice root, chrysanthemum flowers and mullbery leaf, powerful antiviral plants used in Traditional Chinese Medicine with potentially promising results.

We also are making healing hand-sanitizers according to a WHO approved formula but with additional skin healing ingredients and steam distilled essential oils.

We are also making fresh St. Rose Healing Balm and new batch of Rose Immortelle Face Creme.

Alembique now ships!

We have all been hit hard by the coronas, so we want to try to make it easier. We resisted shipping, online retail orders etc. for eight years, but this is a new world and we must adapt to serve our community.

We go to USPS twice a week and will gladly ship anywhere for a minimum order of $35. Text us your order and address and once confirmed we will pack and ship your items. We will text/email you a total including postage which you can paypal to info@alembique.com.
